Collectors of top South African wines have the opportunity to add some notable bottles to their cellars with the release of three highly anticipated Vergelegen wines dating as far back as 2001.
Vergelegen’s GVB Red 2014 and 2015, from the 321-year-old Somerset West estate’s flagship range, were awarded five stars in the Platter’s Wine Guide in the red blends, Cape Bordeaux section.
The wine is available from the estate and can be enjoyed now or age for another 15 years. The GVB Red 2014 retails for R615/bottle. Collectors can also acquire the 2015 vintage by purchasing a combined package of one 2014 bottle and one 2015 bottle for R985.00.
The cellar team has also completed the painstaking process of recorking 126 bottles of 20-year-old wine with corks guaranteed not to taint the wines. The result is a limited release of Vergelegen GVB Red 2001, available from the estate for R1500/bottle.
Vergelegen wine is currently available at the estate seven days a week (or can be pre-ordered and collected later) from the Wine Tasting Centre. Call 021 8472122, or email email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The first Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc crafted by Cellarmaster Elunda Basson has stepped out in style expressing its timeless elegance with a refined new look.
Since joining Steenberg Vineyards in June 2019 as Cellarmaster and General Manager at the pinnacle of her career, Elunda has set her sights on securing Steenberg’s rightful place as a producer of top tier Sauvignon Blanc. Her zesty Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2020 embraces all the qualities akin to the oldest wine region in the New World. It hypnotises with a seductive bouquet of fresh Cape gooseberries, nettles, capsicum and white blossom.
On the other side of the spectrum is the beautifully textured, lightly wooded Steenberg Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc. This multi-layered Sauvignon Blanc has a rich and alluring mouthfeel by virtue of the gentle fermentation of a portion of the wine in French oak and concrete egg-shaped vessels. It is an elegant and comforting wine, ideal for enjoying on cooler days.
The Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2020 will be released later in March and will be available at the cellar door at R145, while Steenberg’s Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc 2019 sells for R170. For more information or online purchases, visit www.steenbergfarm.com

From Vilafonté comes the news that its Seriously Old Dirt 2019 is now available. This complex, cabernet sauvignon-driven Bordeaux-style blend builds on almost 25 years of experience in producing wines grown in ancient African soils.
“The 2019 vintage yielded wines with freshness, structural classicism, mineral tension and harmony, and this superb new release from Vilafonté speaks honestly of the vintage and continues to fly the flag for premium second wines that offer exceptional quality, value for money and age-ability,” writes Greg Sherwood MW.
The wine sells for R265 per bottle.
