Steenberg Vineyards in the Constantia Valley has launched its 1682 Pinot Noir Brut to complement its signature Chardonnay Cap Classique. It is the first Pinot Noir Cap Classique to be produced on the farm and only 3000 bottles of the newly released 2006 vintage will be available from leading wine shops and the cellar door. The cellar door price is R225 per bottle.
The 1682 Pinot Noir Brut will also feature prominently on the festive season menus of both Steenberg restaurants, Catharina’s and Bistro 1682, the new cellar door restaurant which is opening on the estate on the 13th of November 2009.
According to John Loubser, General Manager and Cellar Master, Steenberg has over the last few years seen an increased demand for sparkling wine: ‘With less sulphur and lower alcohol percentages, good quality sparkling wine has in recent years become the drink of choice of many people who enjoy it anytime, day or night! Our 1682 Chardonnay Brut has certainly been a consistent favourite within our product range, and following its success, we felt that the market was ready for us to go one step further, to introduce a unique, limited release Pinot Noir Cap Classique too.
“We are very excited about introducing the Pinot Noir Brut. It has spent three years on the lees and is an exclusive, truly hand-crafted wine, from hand picking the grapes and the riddling through to the neck labelling process and packaging in our newly designed boxes. With its lovely pink salmon colour, substantial body and fine mousse, we expect this wine to be very popular over the festive season”, he concluded.
Steenberg is also accelerating production of its popular 1682 Chardonnay Brut, which will increase next year from 32 000 to 48 000 bottles. It is currently available at the cellar door for R120 per bottle.
