South African winemakers must stop comparing their wines with any other country’s as our wines are good enough to stand on their own feet! Maybe it’s become time for the other countries’ winemakers to compare their wines with ours!

More proof that South African wines are “simply the best” comes from the world’s best sommelier, Andreas Larsson, who shares his wine discoveries, impressions and preferences in the first edition of The Wine Guide.

Larsson won the prestigious title of Meilleur Sommerlier du Monde in 2007 and the unique approach and format of his guide is winning world-wide appreciation.

Among the South African wines Larsson rates highly are Raats Private Cellar’s MR de Compostello 2005, while Chenin Blancs from Raats, Villiera, Rudera, Ken Forrester and Rijk’s make his My Top Picks list

Winemaker Bruwer Raats' collaboration with Mzo Mvemve on the 2005 MR de Compostella steals the limelight by being the only South African and New World wine to be included in Larsson's list of exceptional wines. This highest accolade is awarded to wines that he considers as truly world-class and amongst the best in the world. He looks for wines that show a great typicality, character, structure, complexity, length and maturation ability.

Larsson was impressed by the “very elegant, floral nose perfumed with violets, dark berries, damp tobacco and spices” and found the palate to have “great structure, very full and concentrated with elegant dark fruit, balanced by a good freshness, structured tannins and a lingering aftertaste with some complex notes.  A superb wine with great potential”.

The 2007 Raats Original Chenin Blanc was one of only two unwooded chenins to make Larsson's My Top Picks, which he views as outstanding wines and the top wines in the respective categories. He describes this Chenin Blanc as “pure nose, abundantly stony with young fruit, quite viscous yet very fresh palate, good mineral character and length”.

The 2006 Raats Chenin Blanc also reached the My Top Picks list for wooded chenin blancs with other prominent producers like Villiera, Rudera, Ken Forrester and Rijk's. Larsson describes the nose as “discreet and really complex” with a showing of “yellow fruits, minerals and some honey”.

According to Raats, it is a great honour to be included in this guide. “Andreas is considered the best in the world and I am absolutely flattered that three of my wines made his selection. He has tasted some of the best wines in the world and for the MR de Compostella to have made such an impression is really gratifying,” says Raats.
