The Laborie Jean Taillefert 2006 was voted the best shiraz at the Santam Paarl Shiraz Chenin Challenge 2010.

The judging panel said that a distinct improvement in quality and emerging “personality” were the defining characteristics during the judging process of this year’s competition. Of the 28 shiraz wines entered, there were minimal faults, with award winners in particular showing “pure fruit flavours” with concentration and true varietal flavours.

“This award highlights the changes and investments that have been happening around the Laborie brand – both from a wine and destination perspective. It signifies our commitment to delivering a total premium quality brand experience,” says Laborie Brand Director, Jeff Gradwell.

A well-balanced wine, the Laborie Jean Taillefert 2006 displays cassis and black cherry fruit aromas. These fruit flavours are supported by cinnamon and pepper spices, complemented by oak aromas of mocha, coffee and toffee. This full-bodied wine has integrated tannins resulting in a soft, smooth finish, with a lingering aftertaste. Enjoy it with a variety of fine cuisine.

The wine retails for approximately R151 per bottle, and is available at selected fine wine outlets nationwide, as well as at Laborie itself.

“We are excited to have won the best shiraz award as it recognizes the merits of Paarl as a quality shiraz producing region. Shiraz is an exciting variety that expresses its terroir more so than most other varieties, and the 2006 vintage is a rich and stylish wine which fully expresses the characteristics of the region,” says Chief Winemaker, Richard Rowe.

Not to be outdone by its sibling, the Laborie Limited Collection Shiraz 2008 earned third place in this prestigious competition.

A dark ruby red, this full-bodied wine displays intense berry and spicy flavours. A variety of aromas, ranging from black cherry, plum and black olives, to vanilla, cedar and hints of spices, linger on the palate. A generous wine with soft, integrated tannins results in a lasting, velvety aftertaste. Enjoy on its own, at a special occasion, or with rich sirloin and rump dishes.

This wine is available from selected outlets and at the cellar itself, and retails for approximately R67 per bottle.
