FOUR-MIDABLE!

The joint venture between winemakers Bruwer Raats and Mzokhona Mvemve continues to make international headlines. The 2007 MR de Compostella recently scored its fourth consecutive 93 points in the October issue of Wine Spectator magazine.

The 2007 vintage of this classic Bordeaux blend topped senior editor James Molesworth’s list of nineteen South African standouts. Molesworth reviewed a diverse collection of Cape wines and included Vilafonte’s Series C and Series M, the 2007 Spice Route Malabar and Adi Badenhorst’s AA Badenhorst Family among his top five.

Molesworth describes the 2007 De Compostella as “densely packed, but well-defined thanks to finely beaded acidity, which stitches together notes of red licorice, damson plum, blackberry preserve and maduro tobacco. Rich, but shows excellent cut on the finish, thanks to a bright floral hint”.

Since the release of the 2004 maiden vintage, the MR de Compostella has carved a niche for itself in the international wine arena. In 2007, this wine scored the highest ever mark for a Bordeaux blend in Wine Spectator and was also the highest rated red from the South African 2004 vintage. Since this illustrious debut, the consistency of the wine has been rewarded with the same incredible score for four years running.

Commenting on the latest rating, Bruwer Raats was euphoric about the unprecedented performance by this friendship wine. “The MR de Compostella was both a meeting of the minds between myself and Mzo and a heavenly synergy of skills. We are so proud of this joint venture and of course delighted that it is doing so brilliantly. When we conceptualised this blend, we always aimed to make each component a supreme expression of that specific variety and to craft a wine filled with nuance and individuality. When consecutive vintages are rated so consistently well, it is indeed a great validation of our dream,” he adds.
