"After 70 years, Douglas Green Wines is still true to the great quality, style and character that my father created.” - Douglas Green Jnr.

Douglas Green Snr had a head for the wine business and a heart in the vineyards of the Cape. He began as a modest wine trader in Paarl’s Main Road when he purchased the Stukvat Bottle Store, and quickly earned a reputation for delivering great wines of consistent quality.

His secret was simple. With extensive knowledge of the winelands, technical winemaking prowess, and an uncanny understanding of his customers’ desires, Douglas Green sourced the best grapes from the finest regions of the Cape and became South Africa’s first true ‘negotiant’ producing original wines in his signature style.

Today, this same ethos is the foundation of the Douglas Green winemaking philosophy. The finest fruit is sourced from the best origins to deliver character and quality loyal to variety. After years of experience and close relationships forged over many vintages, Douglas Green’s growers and appointed cellars are virtually ‘part of the family’. Douglas Green’s oenologist, Jaco Potgieter, and his team control every aspect from harvest to final blending and bottling at their cellars in Wellington committed to delivering honest wines of quality that far exceeds a modest price.

The Varietal Range

Douglas Green was as a leader of industry with the courage to break from conventional ways of making wine and follow his instincts in search of the perfect grapes always personally selected for character and style true to the variety. The 3 white and 4 red wines in the varietal range celebrate his journey of inspired exploration across the Cape winelands that still provides the blueprint for their varietal origins.

The range, priced between R30 and R40, consists of the Douglas Green Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Douglas Green Chardonnay 2012, Douglas Green Chenin Blanc 2012, Douglas Green Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, Douglas Green Shiraz 2011, Douglas Green Pinotage 2011 and the Douglas Green Merlot 2011.

The Blends

Douglas Green knew that making great wine is a combination of good quality fruit, hands-on skill and the instincts of the winemaker. The Douglas Green blends, priced between R25 and R30, perfectly balance the natural affinity between grape varieties blended for broad appeal with effortless accessibility for easy drinking and consist of the Douglas Green Chenin Blanc Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Douglas Green Pinotage Rosé 2012 (left) and the Douglas Green Merlot Malbec 2011.

Seventy years later, Douglas Green’s personal touch is still tangible in the eponymous range of wines made with the same intuition that began a progressive and modern wine brand in 1942. Today this tradition has kept the wines at the forefront of modern styles enjoyed in South Africa and exported to more than 50 countries around the world.
