AYAMA introduces their premium 2023 Nero d’Avola

AYAMA at the foothills of the Paardeberg in an area known as Voor-Paardeberg has added to its Italian varietals with the introduction of its first Nero d’Avola. The premium 2023 Nero d’Avola (or NERO DEL CAPO as it’s known) follows the successful launch a few years ago of AYAMA’s first Vermentino.

Nero d’Avola means “black (grape) of Avola”, Avola being a city in the province of Syracuse in Sicily, Italy. AYAMA, if you don’t yet know (where have you been the past decade?), is the trademark of Slent Farms, and as it is proudly South African (and Cape in particular), it was decided to call their wine NERO DEL CAPO, or “black (grape) of the Cape”!

The grapes for this premium and award-winning wine were harvested early morning. Alcoholic fermentation took place in open containers with frequent punch-downs. After fermentation the wine remained in maceration on the skins for 3 weeks after which malolactic fermentation took place in old 500ℓ barrels. The wine was then aged for 10 months in third-fill 500ℓ French oak barrels before bottling.

“The wine has a dark ruby colour,” says Chiara Fabietti, winemaker. “It is rich, yet soft, with notes of ripe raspberry and plum on the nose, while the palate is filled with fruit aromas like cherries and mulberries with notes of herbs and spice. It has delicate tannins on the aftertaste.”

She says the wine will age well for up to 7 years after vintage if cellared correctly and recommends it be enjoyed on its own with friends or with cured meats, aged cheese, roasted meats and pasta dishes like lasagne.

“Nero d’Avola could become a key red variety locally because of its high natural acidity, drought tolerance and juice style”, Chiara adds.
