ARW Van Lill & Visser Chenin Blanc 2017 top scores in wine report

Chenin blanc has certainly come a very long way since the days of it being regarded as South Africa’s “work horse” wine grape variety and many producers have turned it into a true thoroughbred to be proud of. One of these is Anthonij Rupert Wyne in the Franschhoek Wine Valley.

And to prove the estate’s ability with this highly versatile variety, the Anthonij Rupert Wyne Van Lill & Visser Chenin Blanc 2017 scored an impressive 95 out of a possible 100 points in the British wine master, Tim Atkin’s, annual report on South African wine.

Atkin is not only a British Master of Wine, but also an accomplished and widely-travelled commentator. Early in 2018 he made two trips to South Africa and his 2018 South Africa Special Report, encompassing a formidable 250 pages, is the product of these trips, as well as subsequent tastings in the UK and Germany.

With reference to the Van Lill and Visser Chenin blanc 2017, winemaker Mark van Buuren highlighted some outstanding qualities of this exceptional wine. “It offers enticing fruit aromas of nectarine and peach, accompanied by hints of honeyed almonds, all of which follow on to the palate, subtly supported by nuances of green melon.  It is interesting to note that bright, vivid acid lifts the broad palate and therefore the wine is fresh and vibrant, with a hint of subtle pithy lemon zest.  The aftertaste is enticing and lingering, this mainly engendered by the weight and concentration of the fruit.”

In addition to the achievement of the Van Lill & Visser Chenin Blanc, 7 other wines from the Anthonij Rupert Wyne wine portfolio scored an excellent 90+ points in the Tim Atkin report:

Anthonij Rupert Cabernet Franc 2012 (90 points)

Cape of Good Hope Laing Semillon 2016 (94 points)

Cape of Good Hope Riebeeksrivier Caroline 2015 (92 points)
